Fiorentina vs Atalanta preview: a winless-looking home side meets Sarri's leaky attack

Fiorentina, 19th with 4 points, host 12th-placed Atalanta in Serie A round 9. Our four models split 3-1 for the home side; the baseline picks Atalanta.

In short

  • Fiorentina are 19th with 4 points from 8 games and have lost their last three league matches.
  • Atalanta are 12th with 10 points and drew 4-4 with Frosinone in their most recent outing.
  • The Poisson baseline favours Atalanta (45.8%) with a most likely score of 1-1; our models split 3-1 for Fiorentina.

Fiorentina’s big summer has not yet paid off

Fiorentina arrive at the Stadio Artemio Franchi for round 9 sitting 19th with 4 points from 8 matches: one win, one draw, six defeats, nine goals scored and 19 conceded. Their form line reads LLLDW, with the lone win a 4-2 victory at Venezia on 11 September, the match in which [1] records Beto making his full debut. Since then they have drawn 1-1 with Napoli and lost at Genoa (2-1), at home to Como (3-1) and at Inter (2-1).

The squad has been rebuilt at real expense. [2] reports deals for Mateo Pellegrino (22.5 million euros from Parma), Viery (15 million from Gremio), Christ Inao Oulaï (26 million from Trabzonspor) and Arthur Atta (25 million from Udinese). Beto arrived from Everton, Pedro Gonçalves joined on loan from Sporting CP, and Franco Mastantuono is on loan from Real Madrid.

Availability is a concern for Fabio Grosso. Atta was listed as unavailable on 25 October, and Assane Diao was ruled out for two to three weeks after a muscular injury, according to [3]. Fiorentina’s attack rating in our model is 0.87, the weaker of the two sides.

Atalanta under Sarri: goals at both ends

Atalanta are 12th with 10 points from 8 games (three wins, one draw, four defeats) and a goal difference of 14 scored, 15 conceded. Football Italia confirmed that [4], and the early results are uneven. Their form reads DLWLL: a 4-4 home draw with Frosinone on 25 October, a 3-2 loss at AC Milan, a 3-1 home win over Venezia, then defeats at Juventus (2-0) and at home to Cagliari (2-1).

There are positives. [5] notes Nikola Krstovic scored a brace against Venezia, and the same site reports that [6] at Milan. Giorgio Scalvini has also [7].

The injury list is longer. Kamaldeen Sulemana was reported [8] after the Ajax defeat, and Thomas Pompei is also listed as out. Eljif Elmas was reported as having received a red card in his last match as of mid-October, and Relja Obric made his senior debut [9], so the back line is stretched. Atalanta’s attack rating of 1.16 is clearly above Fiorentina’s.

What the models say

The Poisson baseline, built from recorded results, expects 1.40 goals for Fiorentina and 1.75 for Atalanta. That translates to 30.9% for a home win, 23.3% for a draw and 45.8% for an away win. Its single most likely scoreline is 1-1, though when it picks the likeliest score within each outcome, an away win comes out at 2-1 to Atalanta. It puts both teams scoring at 62.2% and over 2.5 goals at 60.9%.

Our four AI models disagree with it, and each other:

  • Claude Keeper: 2-1 home win (42% home, 28% draw, 30% away), citing home advantage and Atalanta’s weaker away record.
  • Gemini Thunder: 2-1 home win (40/28/32), arguing Fiorentina’s attack is better than their table position suggests.
  • GPT Striker: 1-2 away win (30/25/45), leaning on Atalanta’s better form and Fiorentina’s absences.
  • DeepThinker: 2-1 home win (45/30/25), pointing to Fiorentina’s new signings and Atalanta’s defensive problems.

Three of four models pick a home win, while the baseline and GPT Striker side with Atalanta. Every model except one expects a one-goal margin, and all of them have both teams scoring. The head-to-head record offers little guidance: Atalanta won 2-0 at home on 30 November 2025, and the sides drew 1-1 in Florence on 22 May.

What to watch on Thursday

The central question is whether Fiorentina’s home form can offset a weak underlying attack. They have scored nine goals in eight games, and a team that has lost three straight league matches needs more than a change of venue. Atalanta, by contrast, have scored in every match listed in their recent results except the 2-0 loss at Juventus, but they have conceded at least twice in four of their last five.

That is why the 2-1 scorelines dominate our predictions. A side that cannot keep clean sheets meets another with the same problem, and both have injury absences in key areas. Kick-off is at 19:45 UTC on 29 October. If Fiorentina’s recruits click early, the home-win models look sharp; if Atalanta’s attackers exploit a leaky Fiorentina defence, the baseline and GPT Striker will have called it right.
