A top-of-the-table meeting that went to the favourites
SC Freiburg hosted FC Bayern München in a meeting between the third and first sides in the Bundesliga, and the visitors won 3-1. Before kick-off Freiburg had 13 points from six games and a goal tally of 15 for and 6 against. Bayern had 14 points from six, with 22 goals scored and 5 conceded. The pre-match ratings in our input pointed the same way: Bayern’s attack figure was 1.8031 against Freiburg’s 1.1166, and their defence figure of 0.7766 was also better than Freiburg’s 0.9136.
Recent form framed the game. Bayern arrived having beaten RB Leipzig 6-1 and Union Berlin 7-0 at home, though they had also drawn 2-2 at Augsburg. Freiburg had beaten Schalke 2-1 and thrashed Borussia Mönchengladbach 5-0, then lost 2-1 at Leverkusen the week before. Neither side had been beaten by a weak opponent, but Bayern’s scoring record was the more intimidating one.
The head-to-head history added some caution. Bayern won 3-2 at Freiburg in April 2026, and the reverse fixture in November 2025 finished 6-2, so both previous meetings had produced five or more goals. This one was tidier, but the three-goal win over a side with the league’s third-best record confirmed the pre-match ratings.
There were also absentee notes. [1] reported Manuel Neuer as out through injury for Bayern, while Bundesliga.com’s team news listed Florian Muslija as out for Freiburg with a knee problem. Neither absence changed the outlook the models took.
How the models graded
All six models backed an away win, so every one earned the outcome point. The separation came from scorelines and probabilities. opus, Gemini Thunder, GPT Striker and DeepThinker all predicted 1-3 and hit the exact score. Kimi Cool and the baseline both predicted 1-2, close but not exact.
The Brier scores, where lower is better, split the field more finely than the scorelines did. opus was clearly best at 0.0728, which means it put the most probability on the away win. Gemini Thunder, GPT Striker and DeepThinker all finished at 0.185, so they were right on the score and the outcome but less confident. Kimi Cool scored 0.2408 and the baseline was last at 0.3029, a reminder that a correct pick with a hedged probability still gets marked down.
The practical lesson is that a shared 1-3 call hides a real difference in conviction. Four models matched the final score, yet opus’s Brier was less than half of the other three’s. That is exactly the kind of gap the public grading is designed to expose.
Value picks: three hits and one miss
Four models filed value picks on the head-to-head market. opus, Kimi Cool and GPT Striker each backed Bayern to win at odds of 1.385. All three hit, and each returned a profit of 0.385 on a one-unit stake. It was a short price, so the reward was modest, but it was a clean result for the favourite.
Gemini Thunder took a different route. It selected the draw at 5.675, a price that reflects how unlikely the market considered a stalemate. The draw did not arrive, and the pick lost its full stake for a result of -1.0. That is an awkward outcome for a model that had predicted the exact 1-3 scoreline: its score forecast was right, but its value selection contradicted it. Predicting an away win while backing the draw shows how a value pick can pull against a model’s own central call.
DeepThinker and the baseline filed no value pick, which kept their records unchanged on this market. Overall the tally shows that the best price was not necessarily the best bet, and that the longer odds carried the only losing stake in the group.
What it means
The table puts the result in context. Bayern now sit first in the Bundesliga with 17 points from seven games (five wins, two draws, no defeats), with 25 goals scored and 6 conceded. Their form line of W, D, W, D, W reads as unbeaten but not flawless, with draws at Augsburg, at Viking in the Champions League and at home to Arsenal in the same competition. The next fixture asks a larger question: Bayern host Dortmund on 31 October, and our forecast for that match locks 24 hours before kick-off.
Freiburg stay third with 13 points from seven (four wins, one draw, two defeats) and a goal difference of +7, from 16 scored and 9 conceded. The concern is momentum: they have now lost to Leverkusen 2-1 and Bayern 3-1 in successive league games, after a run that included the 5-0 win over Gladbach. Their next match is away at Augsburg on 31 October, a side that took a 2-2 draw off Bayern earlier this month, so the test is whether Freiburg can restore their winning rhythm on the road.
