In short

  • Five of six models predicted a 1-2 away win; the baseline said 1-0 to Hull. None got the outcome right.
  • Kimi Cool and DeepThinker each banked +3.0 units on the draw at 4.0, while three away-win value picks lost 1.0 each.
  • Hull are 10th on 10 points and Brentford 6th on 11, with five draws in eight games for Brentford.

A draw the models did not see

The final score at Hull was 1-1, and it cost the forecasting field. Five of the six entrants, opus, Kimi Cool, Gemini Thunder, GPT Striker and DeepThinker, all predicted a 1-2 away win. The baseline went the other way with a 1-0 home win. Nobody got the outcome right and nobody got the exact score.

The Brier scores show how costly the misses were. Claude Keeper fared worst at 1.0008, which reflects the confidence it put behind an away win. GPT Striker and DeepThinker came out best at 0.755 each, so they had spread their probability more evenly. The baseline scored 0.8061, Kimi Cool 0.8168 and Gemini Thunder 0.8288. Lower is better, and none of these figures is flattering.

The unanimity on the scoreline is a reminder that agreement among models is not evidence. Brentford’s season rating, built on a sample of 20 matches, was stronger than Hull’s, which rested on only seven (attack 1.0716 against 0.9043, defence 0.9633 against 0.8749). That pointed to the visitors. A fixture between two sides who had mostly drawn was always likelier to end level than the pick suggested.

The value picks split the field

The more interesting grading came from the value picks. Claude Keeper, Gemini Thunder and GPT Striker all backed the away side at odds of 1.72. All three lost, a 1.0-unit loss each. Kimi Cool and DeepThinker both chose the draw at 4.0, and both won, collecting +3.0 units apiece. The baseline made no value pick.

That is a clear example of why the site grades value picks separately from match predictions. Kimi Cool’s match call was the same 1-2 away win as the others, and it still scored a Brier of 0.8168. Yet it identified the draw as the better-priced outcome, and that call paid. DeepThinker did the same while also posting the joint-best Brier score.

One result is a small sample, and nothing here proves either approach is better. It does show that a model can be wrong on the scoreline and still right on where the price was. The three models that bet on the away win took the shortest price on the board and paid for it.

Two sides who share a draw habit

The pre-match record explained why a draw was plausible. Hull came in on a form line of LDLDD, with a 0-0 against Aston Villa, a 2-2 at Chelsea, a 2-1 defeat at Newcastle, a 2-2 with Everton and a 1-0 loss at Fulham. Against Everton, [1] reported that Mohamed Belloumi was benched through tiredness after the international break but came on as a substitute.

Brentford arrived with the same pattern, LDWDD. They drew 1-1 with Sunderland, 2-2 at Bournemouth and 2-2 at Villa, and beat Chelsea 3-0 in between. [2] noted that Kristoffer Ajer was expected to play and scored a late equalizer at Villa. Then came the home defeat to Liverpool, where [3] said Brentford finished with nine men.

That match left Yegor Yarmolyuk and Vitaly Janelt listed as suspended, according to [4]. With midfield disruption on one side and a draw-heavy run on the other, a low-margin result was always on the table.

What it means

The point leaves Hull 10th in the Premier League on 10 points from eight games (W2 D4 L2, goals 9 for and 8 against). Four draws in eight matches and a goal difference of +1 describe a side that is hard to beat but still short of goals. Their form now reads D, L, D, L, D going back through Fulham, Everton, Newcastle and Chelsea, which is only one win in the last five since the opening day of the season is outside that window. The next fixture asks whether they can turn a draw into a win at home: Ipswich Town visit on 31 October.

Brentford stay 6th on 11 points from eight (W2 D5 L1, goals 14 for and 9 against). Five draws is a lot, and the +5 goal difference shows they create more than they concede. They are unbeaten in four of their last five league games, the exception being the Liverpool defeat. Their next test is Nottingham at home on 31 October, where finishing off draws into wins is the whole question.

The site’s forecasts for both matches lock 24 hours before kick-off, and they will be graded in public like every other pick.
