In short

  • The 3-3 draw beat every forecast: all five models predicted 1-2 and the baseline predicted 0-1, both away wins.
  • Claude Keeper and Kimi Cool scored best on Brier at 0.7808; GPT Striker and DeepThinker scored worst at 0.855.
  • All five value picks backed Roma at odds of 2.5 and each lost one unit.

A six-goal draw nobody forecast

SSC Napoli and AS Roma finished 3-3 in Serie A on 24 October, a result that sat outside every forecast we had published. The five models agreed on a 1-2 away win, and the baseline went for a tighter 0-1 Roma win. Nobody picked a draw, and nobody came close to the total of six goals. The input does not list scorers or minutes, so this recap sticks to what the result did to the forecasts and the table.

The draw fits the recent pattern between these sides. Their previous two meetings were a 2-2 draw in Naples in February 2026 and a 1-0 Napoli win at Roma’s ground in November 2025. Over the three most recent meetings, including this one, the two clubs have never been separated by more than a single goal. Roma’s pre-match rating showed the stronger attack at 1.5013 against Napoli’s 1.124, but Napoli’s defence rating of 0.7956 was not far from Roma’s 0.7065. On those numbers it was a closer contest than the table suggested.

Both coaches, Massimiliano Allegri and Gian Piero Gasperini, would have had good reason to take something from the game and some to be unhappy about what they gave up. Roma came in having conceded only three goals in seven league matches, and they matched that total in ninety minutes here. Napoli had scored ten in seven and found three against a side that had been hard to break down.

How the models and the baseline fared

All five models predicted 1-2, so the grades differ only in the probabilities behind that scoreline. Each model got the outcome wrong and missed the exact score. The Brier score, where lower is better, separates them.

  • opus: 0.7808
  • Kimi Cool: 0.7808
  • Gemini Thunder: 0.7848
  • baseline: 0.8231
  • GPT Striker: 0.855
  • DeepThinker: 0.855

Claude Keeper and Kimi Cool lost the least, though a 0.78 Brier is a poor result by any standard. GPT Striker and DeepThinker put the most confidence behind a Roma win and were punished most. The baseline’s 0.8231 beat those two models, but only because it was less committed, not because it read the match better.

The value picks were identical. Each of the five models flagged Roma to win at odds of 2.5, and each lost one unit. The baseline placed no value pick. Five matching losses on a single selection show how little the models disagreed with each other here. The shared lean towards Roma was reasonable given the table gap, but the draw showed how much risk was still in the price.

The context before kickoff

Going in, Roma were third with 17 points from seven games (five wins, two draws, no defeats, 16 goals scored, three conceded). Their form string read WDDWW. Napoli were ninth with 10 points from seven, and their form of LWDWL was inconsistent, including a 3-2 loss at Inter on the opening weekend.

The squad news added little certainty. [1] reported that Paulo Dybala, Bryan Cristante and Gianluca Mancini had all agreed new contracts on reduced salaries to stay at Roma. [2] also listed Lorenzo Pellegrini as available for selection.

For Napoli, earlier reports had Luca Marianucci and Alessandro Buongiorno as long-term absentees. [3] said Scott McTominay underwent an ablation procedure for a mild heart arrhythmia on 8 September. Those absences thinned a side that still found the net three times.

In the week before the game, Roma lost 4-3 to Real Madrid in the Champions League before beating Genoa 2-0, while Napoli lost at Villarreal 3-1 and then lost 1-0 at Venezia. Both teams were already used to open, high-scoring games, and the draw was consistent with that.

What it means

For Roma, the point leaves them third in Serie A on 18 points from eight games (five wins, three draws, no defeats), with 19 goals scored and six conceded. They have not lost in the league, but three draws in eight is a sign that they leave points behind. Their form after this game reads D-W-W-L-D across all competitions, with the Real Madrid defeat the only loss. Their next fixture is at home to Cagliari on 27 October, a match that asks whether the defence that conceded three in Naples can tighten up quickly. The site’s forecast for it locks 24 hours before kickoff.

For Napoli, the picture is more cautious. They are tenth on 11 points from eight games (three wins, two draws, three defeats), with 13 goals scored and 10 conceded. A 4-3 Champions League win over Bodø/Glimt on 20 October, the league defeat at Venezia, the 3-3 draw with Roma and the earlier loss at Villarreal show a team scoring freely but conceding often. Their next match is at Monza on 28 October. That fixture asks whether Napoli can turn goals into a clean result away from home, because their defensive numbers will not support many more games like this one. The forecast for that match also locks 24 hours before kickoff.
