A 3-0 that reverses the January score
Rayo Vallecano de Madrid beat RC Celta de Vigo 3-0 in Vallecas, and the scoreline mirrors the meeting in January, when Celta won 3-0 at home. The September 2025 fixture at Rayo ended 1-1, so Rayo now have a win, a draw and a defeat from the last three meetings.
The result matters for the mood around the club as much as for the table. Rayo came into the game after a 0-3 home defeat to Elche a week earlier and a 1-1 draw at Getafe before that. That Elche game was memorable for penalties: [1] reported that Emil Audero saved one and Raúl de Tomás missed another. Beñat San José, named by [2] as the current coach, therefore needed a response, and a clean three-goal win is a firm one.
Celta arrived with a very different profile. Their recent run read D, W, D, W, D, a side hard to beat but short of goals, with 10 scored in their first ten league games. Losing by three is out of character for a team that had drawn six of its first ten.
How the models graded
Five of the six predictors backed the home win, which is a reasonable return for a match that Rayo were not obviously favoured to win on form. None found the exact score, though, because every home-win pick was a one-goal margin (1-0 or 2-1).
GPT Striker (2-1) had the best Brier score at 0.455. Kimi Cool (1-0) scored 0.5046, Gemini Thunder (2-1) and DeepThinker (1-0) both scored 0.54, and the Baseline (1-0) scored 0.5987. Those differences reflect how much probability each model put on the home win, not the scoreline. A more confident home call earned a better score once the match finished 3-0.
Claude Keeper was the outlier. It predicted a 1-2 away win, got the outcome wrong, and finished with a Brier of 0.7008, the worst of the group.
The value picks add a second layer. Both Gemini Thunder and GPT Striker flagged the home side on the h2h market at odds of 2.4, and both hit, for a profit of 1.4 units each. No other model logged a value pick on this match.
Injuries and context on both sides
The pre-match picture carried real absences, and Celta’s list was the longer. [3] reported that Miguel Román had knee surgery and would be out for about a month and a half, having started seven of Celta’s first eight games. Another [4] report said Carl Starfelt would miss a similar period with a muscle tear in his right thigh. [5] noted Borja Iglesias missing for Celta in the Europa League defeat to Juventus.
Celta also carried European fixtures, which adds load to a squad already thinned in defence and midfield. Not every model priced that in, and Claude Keeper’s away pick suggests it leaned on Celta’s unbeaten league run rather than the injury list.
Rayo had their own blow. [6] confirmed that Luiz Felipe tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will miss the rest of the season. Rayo’s defence had already conceded 20 goals in their first nine league games, so a clean sheet and a three-goal margin stand out against that record.
What it means
For Rayo, the win lifts them to 11th in La Liga with 12 points from 10 games (W3 D3 L4, 15 scored, 20 conceded). A goal difference of minus five is still the table’s weak spot, but the 3-0 repaired some of it in a single afternoon. The form line now reads W, L, D, D, W across the last five league games, which is a team alternating between results rather than building a run. The next fixture is Real Sociedad v Rayo Vallecano on 8 November, and the question there is whether the defence can produce back-to-back clean sheets away from home. The site’s forecast for that game locks 24 hours before kick-off.
For Celta, the defeat leaves them 9th with 12 points from 11 games (W2 D6 L3, 10 scored, 10 conceded). Six draws show how often they have avoided defeat without winning, and this was a rare game where they did not hold the line. Their next match is at home to Levante on 8 November, where the test is whether a side that rarely loses by much can turn a share of the points into wins. The site’s forecast for that game also locks 24 hours before kick-off.
