The result and the grades
RB Leipzig beat SV 07 Elversberg 4-0 and made the favourites’ tag look comfortable. All six prediction models backed the home win, so the outcome column is a clean sweep. The exact score is a different story: nobody predicted a 4-0. Claude Keeper went for 2-0, the baseline for 2-1, and Kimi Cool, Gemini Thunder, GPT Striker and DeepThinker all went for 3-1. Every model got the direction right and underestimated the margin.
The Brier scores separate the models. A lower Brier score means the probabilities were better calibrated.
- GPT Striker: 0.135, the best of the group
- opus and Kimi Cool: 0.1544 each
- Gemini Thunder and DeepThinker: 0.185 each
- baseline: 0.295, the weakest by some distance
The gap between the baseline and the rest shows what the extra confidence in a Leipzig win was worth. The four models that flagged a value pick all chose the same one, the home win at 1.42. It came in for a profit of 0.42 per unit on each of the four. DeepThinker and the baseline did not put forward a value selection, so they have no staking result to report.
How Leipzig arrived
Leipzig came in with an uneven record. Their form string read LWLWL, and the table had them seventh with 9 points from 6 games. The results swung hard in both directions: a 5-0 win over Hamburger SV, a 6-0 home win over Eintracht Frankfurt, and a 6-1 defeat at Bayern Munich on 17 October. The team’s attacking rating of 1.2679 was well above Elversberg’s 1.0951, which is where the models found their confidence.
There was also a lot of individual quality in the squad. [1] noted that Christopher Nkunku and Antonio Nusa had been in impressive form for Leipzig. [2] also reported that David Raum led the league for chances created, with 20. Yan Diomande’s move to Real Madrid, covered by [3], removed one attacking option, but the front line still had plenty to work with.
The schedule was the other factor. Leipzig played PSV at home on 13 October and then lost 4-1 at Real Madrid in the Champions League three days before this match. A heavy week did not stop them producing their cleanest league performance in a while.
Elversberg’s visit
Elversberg arrived sixth in the table with 10 points from 6, helped by a lively start that included a 4-3 win at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Their recent run was mixed: a 1-2 home defeat to Bayern, a goalless draw at Schalke, a 1-0 loss at Union Berlin and a 4-3 home win over Augsburg. Their goals against column, 11 from six matches, suggested a side that scores and concedes in bulk, and that profile can be punished by an attack like Leipzig’s.
The Augsburg game showed both sides of it. According to [4], Lukas Petkov scored the opening goal from a rebound after his own penalty was saved. Lasse Günther and Maximilian Rohr added goals, with Maurice Krattenmacher and Felix Keidel supplying the assists. Krattenmacher had joined from Bayern Munich in the summer, as [5] reported.
Elversberg also had youth and loan talent in the squad. Noah Darvich arrived on loan from VfB Stuttgart, and several players earned first Germany U21 call-ups, according to [6]. Against a Leipzig side playing at home and in this form, it was not enough, and a 0-4 away defeat was the result.
What it means
The win lifts RB Leipzig to fifth in the Bundesliga, with 12 points from 7 games (four wins, three defeats) and a goal record of 20 scored and 11 conceded. Their recent run is volatile: a 6-0 win over Frankfurt, a 1-6 defeat at Bayern, a 1-0 win over PSV, a 1-4 loss at Real Madrid and now this 4-0. That pattern says a big result is as likely as a heavy one against, and it makes the next game harder to read. Leipzig travel to Schalke on 31 October, and the site’s forecast for that match locks 24 hours before kick-off. The question is whether they can keep their attack sharp on the road after a taxing week.
For Elversberg, the defeat leaves them eighth with 10 points from 7 (three wins, one draw, three defeats) and a goal difference of minus 3, from 12 scored and 15 conceded. The form line now reads two defeats in the last three league games, with only the Augsburg win in between. Their next test is at home to Mainz on 30 October, and the site’s forecast for that also locks 24 hours before kick-off. After conceding four, the question is whether their defence can tighten up enough to match the attacking spark they showed against Augsburg.
For the models, the lesson is about margins rather than direction. Six of six picked the right winner, yet none saw a four-goal gap. The next round of grades will show whether the tight 3-1 consensus was a one-off or a habit.
