How the predictions were graded
Real Betis beat Málaga CF 2-1 in La Liga, the result everyone on the grading sheet had backed. All six forecasters, five models plus the baseline, predicted a home win, so the outcome column is a clean sweep. The differences come from the scorelines and the confidence behind them.
DeepThinker was the only one to call 2-1 and so the only exact-score hit. Claude Keeper, Kimi Cool, Gemini Thunder, GPT Striker and the baseline all went for 2-0. They were right on the winner but missed Málaga’s goal.
The Brier score measures probability calibration, and lower is better. Claude Keeper led on 0.0896, followed by Kimi Cool on 0.1208. Gemini Thunder and GPT Striker both finished on 0.14, and the baseline on 0.152. DeepThinker, despite the exact score, had the highest figure at 0.185. That suggests it spread its probability more cautiously than the others, which cost it on calibration even though its headline pick was the sharpest.
Five models also flagged the home win on the head-to-head market as a value pick, at odds of 1.32. All five hit, each returning +0.32 on a one-unit stake. The baseline made no value pick.
Betis: a busy, uneven stretch
Betis arrived in fourth place with a record that swung between emphatic and shaky. Their recent results before this match read: a 1-0 home win over Getafe, a 1-1 draw at Deportivo La Coruña, a 5-2 win over Osasuna, a 2-5 home defeat to Barcelona and a 0-0 draw at Celta Vigo. The attack rating in the input, 1.1308, sat comfortably above the defence figure of 1.0279, which fits a side that scores freely and concedes in bursts.
The squad news was mostly about continuity and turnover. [1] described Marc Roca as a regular starter for Manuel Pellegrini, and his move from Leeds United was made permanent with a contract to June 2029. [2] highlighted Cucho Hernández as a mobile forward who drops deep to link play and create space. Antony had played in all eight official matches and started seven, according to [3].
The summer also saw departures, including Nelson Deossa, sold for around 8 million euros, plus Iker Losada and Júnior Firpo. Against the division’s bottom side, that depth was enough to see the job through.
Málaga: competitive in patches, but still searching for a win
Málaga came in as the league’s 20th-placed side with no wins from their first ten games and five draws. The pre-match record showed 7 goals scored and 19 conceded, with a defence rating of 1.2434 against an attack rating of 0.7361, so the numbers pointed to a team that struggled at both ends.
Their recent run did little to change the picture. They lost 3-1 to Villarreal, lost 1-0 at Getafe, drew 1-1 with Espanyol, lost 2-5 to Real Sociedad and drew 1-1 at Alavés. Per [4], coach Juan Funes argued there was a clear foul on Recio in the build-up to Alavés’s goal, and Adrián Niño scored for Málaga in that game.
There were smaller positives. [5] called David Larrubia a key player, and Pablo Martínez was among the summer reinforcements. On the injury side, Marca reported on 12 October that Jens Cajuste would be out for a month with a muscle injury. Málaga did get a goal at the Betis ground, but it was not enough, and the model projections that leaned on their weak defence had it right.
What it means
For Betis, the win leaves them fourth in La Liga on 23 points from 11 games (W7 D2 L2, 18 scored, 15 conceded). Their last five results, newest first, are W, D, W, L, W across La Liga and the Champions League, so the form is good, if less convincing at the back than in attack. The next test is a long trip: Dortmund v Real Betis in the Champions League on 4 November. The site’s forecast for that game locks 24 hours before kick-off, and a side that has conceded 15 in 11 league games will be asked to defend more tightly away from home.
For Málaga, the picture is harder. They sit 20th on 5 points from 11 games with no wins (D5 L6), having scored 8 and conceded 21. The loss at Betis follows a 1-1 draw at Alavés and a 2-5 home defeat to Real Sociedad, so the last three league games have brought one point. The next fixture is at home against Santander on 7 November, with the site’s forecast locking 24 hours before kick-off. That looks like the kind of match where Málaga’s first win has to come from, and it will test whether their draws can finally turn into victories.
