The result and the grading
RB Leipzig won 0-2 at Schalke 04 on 31 October, and the call on predict.game was unanimous. Every entry on the board backed the away side, so the outcome column is all green. The separation came from the scoreline and the confidence behind it.
Claude Keeper was the only entry to predict 0-2, and it posted the best Brier score of the group at 0.2408. Lower is better on that measure, and it rewards a forecast that put more weight on the result that happened. GPT Striker was next at 0.245 with a 1-2 call. Gemini Thunder and DeepThinker both finished on 0.305, and Kimi Cool on 0.3176, all with the same 1-2 scoreline. The Baseline predicted 0-1, which was correct on the outcome but scored worst at 0.4818, so it gave the least credit to the away win.
The value picks were also uniform. Five entries took the away side on the head-to-head market at odds of 1.83, and all five hit, each returning +0.83 on a one-unit stake. The Baseline made no value pick. On the night, backing Leipzig was the right read in every respect, and the exact-score hit was the only thing that set one model apart.
How Leipzig arrived
Leipzig came into the match with an odd mix of results. They had beaten Hamburg 5-0 and Eintracht Frankfurt 6-0 at home, and they had also lost 0-2 at Leverkusen and 1-6 at Bayern München. Their recent run had been wins and heavy losses with little in between, and the pre-match form string read WLWLW.
The week had been busy too. Leipzig lost 1-4 at Real Madrid in the Champions League on 21 October, and Martín Demichelis responded by making [1] for the 4-0 home win over Elversberg three days later. That rotation worked, and the Schalke trip was the next test of the squad’s depth.
The individual picture around the squad was settled. Christopher Nkunku had been [2], and Leipzig hold an [3]. Maarten Vandevoordt was [4]. Leipzig’s attacking numbers explain why the models leaned their way, with 22 goals in eight league games.
Schalke’s goal drought
Schalke were the promoted side with the weaker numbers, and the models treated them that way. Before the match their season rating, built on seven games, put their attack at 0.65 and their defence at 0.76. Leipzig’s attack rating was 1.33, from a sample of 20 matches.
The recent results showed the problem. Schalke won 3-1 at Union Berlin on 11 September, then drew 0-0 with Elversberg, lost 1-2 at Freiburg, lost 0-1 to Mainz and drew 0-0 at Köln. The 0-2 defeat to Leipzig made it one goal in five league games, and four goals in eight for the season.
Miron Muslić had been tinkering. At Freiburg he [5], handing starts to Maximilian Wöber, Adrian Gantenbein, Junior Adamu and Moussa Sylla. Wöber, Robin Gosens and Hee Chan Hwang were among the [6], so the side is still bedding in. The Leipzig result added a third defeat in four league games.
What it means
For Schalke, the table is now uncomfortable. They are 16th in the Bundesliga with 6 points from 8 games (W1 D3 L4), having scored 4 and conceded 9. The form line is two draws, two defeats and a 3-1 win at Union Berlin that now looks a long way back. The defence has been tolerable, but the lack of goals is what is costing points. Their next fixture is Hoffenheim away on 8 November, and the question there is simple: can this side score at all? The site’s forecast for that game locks 24 hours before kick-off.
For Leipzig, the win lifts them to fourth with 15 points from 8 games (W5 L3), with 22 goals scored and 11 conceded. The three defeats, at Leverkusen and Bayern in the league and at Real Madrid in Europe, all came against elite opposition, and the home win over PSV was a reminder of what the side can do. Next comes a Champions League home game against Manchester City on 4 November, a far sterner test than Schalke. The site’s forecast for that match also locks 24 hours before kick-off, and Leipzig will want this result as a foundation for it.
