In short

  • Bremen have lost once in seven league games (12 points, 6th), but three of their last five were draws.
  • Hoffenheim (9 points, 10th) beat Leverkusen 3-0 and Gladbach 2-1, yet lost to Hamburg and Paderborn; Wimmer and Gendrey are out.
  • The Poisson baseline gives Bremen 48.6%, a draw 21.1% and Hoffenheim 30.3%, with both teams scoring at 70.1%.

Werder Bremen host TSG 1899 Hoffenheim at the Weserstadion on Saturday 31 October (14:30 UTC) in round 8 of the Bundesliga. Bremen sit sixth on 12 points, Hoffenheim tenth on nine. The table gap is small, and both teams concede freely, so the match looks set to produce goals.

Bremen: plenty of goals, few defeats

Daniel Thioune’s side have won three, drawn three and lost one of their seven league games, scoring 15 and conceding 14. Their recent form reads W-D-D-W-D. They won 3-2 at Mainz last weekend, drew 2-2 at home to Paderborn and 2-2 at Dortmund, beat Augsburg 3-2 and drew 1-1 at Köln. Every one of those games except Köln had at least four goals.

Stability has been a feature. [1] reported that Thioune named an unchanged starting XI for the fifth consecutive match against Paderborn. The squad has also been reshaped. Niclas Füllkrug is back [2], and Ludovit Reis [3] and scored at Dortmund. Mitchell Weiser has returned from a long injury layoff. The cost of all those goals is that Bremen rarely keep a clean sheet.

Hoffenheim: a swing side with new injury worries

Christian Ilzer’s Hoffenheim have won three and lost four, with 14 goals scored and 14 conceded. Their form of W-W-L-L-W shows how far results can swing. A 2-3 home defeat to Hamburg and a 1-3 loss at Paderborn were followed by a 2-1 win at Borussia Mönchengladbach and a 3-0 home win over Bayer Leverkusen, which is the best result on either side’s recent record.

Their squad is thinner than that run suggests. [4] reported that Patrick Wimmer is expected to be out until the next international break with a thigh injury. Kicker also [5] that Valentin Gendrey broke his fibula in the cup elimination at Kiel and will be out for a long time. For the win at Gladbach, [6] noted that Alexander Prass, Robin Hranac, Mats Rots and Adam Hložek were all brought into the starting eleven. Ilzer has been rotating, and he has two more absentees to cover.

Head-to-head and the numbers

History favours the visitors. Hoffenheim beat Bremen 1-0 on 9 May and won 2-0 at the Weserstadion on 27 January, so Bremen have not scored against them in either of the last two meetings. That says little about this season’s teams, though, because the squads have changed.

The Poisson baseline built from recorded results leans towards the hosts. It gives expected goals of 2.08 for Bremen and 1.62 for Hoffenheim, with outcome probabilities of 48.6% home, 21.1% draw and 30.3% away. Its most likely score is 2-1. It puts both teams scoring at 70.1% and more than 2.5 goals at 71.4%. Those figures fit what both teams’ recent results show: neither side has been able to keep opponents out. The baseline is a statistical estimate from past results and does not account for the injuries above.

What the models predict

The five AI models are split. Claude Keeper is the most confident in the hosts, at 52% home, 22% draw and 26% away, and picks 2-1. It cites Bremen’s league position and form and Hoffenheim’s absences. GPT Striker also picks 2-1 (45/25/30) on Bremen’s resilience at home. DeepThinker goes 2-1 as well but gives the draw 30% (40/30/30).

Kimi Cool and Gemini Thunder both pick a 2-1 away win for Hoffenheim, each giving the visitors 40%. Kimi points to the head-to-head record and the wins at Leverkusen and Gladbach, and Gemini to those results as well, though it still rates Bremen’s settled XI highly. Both of those home probabilities sit between 32% and 35%.

The overall picture is a narrow lean to Bremen, with a draw never above 30% in any forecast. A 2-1 scoreline in either direction fits the baseline and most of the models. Hoffenheim’s depth problems and Bremen’s defensive record are the factors most likely to decide it.
