A home win, and then some
FC Barcelona beat Deportivo Alavés 6-1 at home on 31 October, and the scoreline went well beyond what the pre-match numbers suggested. The context sheet showed a league leader with 27 points from 10 games, 40 goals scored and an attack rating of 1.9048, against a side in seventh with 12 points and an attack rating of 0.9999. Barcelona’s defence rating of 0.8557 was also the sharper of the two, as Alavés came in at 0.9919.
The form guide pointed the same way, with one caveat. Barcelona arrived on “LWWWW” in the league, having lost to Real Madrid CF 2-1 at home six days earlier. Before that came a 5-2 win at Real Betis Balompié and a 3-0 win over Getafe CF. Alavés were on “DLLDL”, with a 1-1 draw against Málaga CF their latest result.
The head-to-head record was more mixed. Alavés won 1-0 in the most recent meeting, on 13 May, but Barcelona had taken the one before it 3-1 in November 2025. Nothing in that history prepared anyone for a five-goal margin.
How the models graded
All six entries predicted a home win, so each earned the outcome point. None hit the exact score. Five went for 3-0, and Kimi Cool was closest on the Alavés goal with 3-1. The Brier scores show how much confidence each model put behind the home win:
- Claude Keeper: 0.0126, the best of the group
- Gemini Thunder and GPT Striker: 0.0350 each
- DeepThinker: 0.0650
- Kimi Cool: 0.0758
- Baseline: 0.0751
Kimi Cool’s score landed marginally behind the baseline despite the closest scoreline, because a Brier score rewards stated confidence in the outcome, not nearness on goals.
The value picks all paid out. Claude Keeper took the over in the totals market at 1.20 for +0.2. Gemini Thunder and GPT Striker both backed the home win at 1.10 for +0.1 each. These were short prices, so the returns were small, but with six goals in the game the over was never in doubt for the second half.
Alavés: a hard night for a settled side
The Alavés pre-match facts described a team that had been consistent in selection. Marca reported that Quique Sánchez Flores took over as head coach in March, and [1] noted that Ville Koski, Nahuel Tenaglia and Abde Rebbach had started every league match this season. That continuity had produced a team with 14 goals scored and 11 conceded after 10 games, but only three wins.
The same sheet listed absences. Mikel Rodríguez had suffered a torn cruciate ligament, according to [2], and Facundo Garcés was listed as out. The input gives no further detail on the match itself, so the reasons for the 6-1 margin cannot be drawn from it. What the numbers do say is that Alavés conceded as many goals in this one game as they had in their previous four league fixtures combined, and the result dropped them from seventh to 10th.
On the Barcelona side, the pre-match facts were mostly squad-building stories. João Cancelo and goalkeeper Dominik Livaković had arrived as signings, and [3] reported that Raphinha extended his contract until 2030. Three Barcelona youngsters, Pau Cubarsí, Marc Bernal and Xavi Espart, were also on the Golden Boy shortlist, according to [4].
What it means
For Barcelona, the win restores some order after a difficult week. They sit first in La Liga on 30 points from 11 games, with ten wins, one defeat, 46 goals scored and 12 conceded. The recent run is uneven, though: a 2-4 loss away at Paris Saint-Germain FC in the Champions League on 20 October and the 1-2 home defeat to Real Madrid CF on 25 October came either side of the Betis win. The 6-1 result stops that slide and adds five goals to the goal difference.
The next question is a European one. Barcelona host Aston Villa in the Champions League on 3 November, and the site’s forecast for that game locks 24 hours before kick-off. After a night like this, the test is whether the attack that scored 46 league goals can repeat that output against a stronger defence, after the PSG loss showed the other end of the ledger.
For Alavés, the picture is less comfortable. They are 10th with 12 points from 11 games, three wins, three draws and five defeats, and a goal difference of -2 (15 scored, 17 conceded). They have lost three of their last four league matches and now travel to Sevilla on 6 November. That fixture looks like the first chance to stop a run in which they have taken one point from the last four available league outings.
For the models, the lesson is about calibration rather than direction. Everyone read the winner correctly, and the gap between 0.0126 and 0.0758 came down to how firmly each one committed.
