Dortmund arrive level at the top
Borussia Dortmund go into matchday 8 of the Bundesliga with the title race already tight. Last Saturday they beat Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0, with Max Beier scoring the only goal, and moved level on points with Bayern Munich at the top of the table, as [1] noted in passing in a piece about the club’s campaign to keep fans off their phones during matches.
The table still lists Dortmund second, and [2] describes them as travelling to first-placed Bayern for the round’s top game. Kicker also reports that coach Niko Kovac calls it an exciting fixture. The same preview gives no injury, selection or transfer news, so the tone is one of anticipation rather than alarm.
The context matters. Dortmund have not lost a league game this season, and a win in Munich on Saturday evening would put them clear at the summit. That is the stated ambition: Kicker writes that Dortmund aim to take the top of the table with this match.
Team news on both sides
The main question for Dortmund is Konstantinos Karetsas. [3] reports that his availability for the Munich match will be decided on Friday, and our records treat him as doubtful. Nothing in the reporting says what role he would have played, so it is fair to say only that Dortmund will know late whether they have him.
Bayern’s picture is a little clearer. [4] says Joshua Kimmich will probably be available again for the clash with Dortmund. Manuel Neuer, however, will not yet be able to play in the match, so the game seems to come too early for him.
Kimmich’s likely return is a boost for the home side, while Dortmund’s wait on Karetsas shows how fine the margins are. Neither report suggests a wider injury crisis, and the available information stops there. Anything beyond those names would be speculation.
What the forecast says
The site’s model leans clearly towards the home side. For Bayern v Dortmund it gives Bayern a 68.0% chance of winning, a draw 19.0% and a Dortmund win 13.0%, with a predicted score of 3-1. That is a strong lean, though it describes probabilities, not certainty. A 13% outcome still happens roughly once in every eight such games.
The model’s caution about Dortmund is easier to understand from the recent results. In their last five matches they beat Frankfurt 1-0 at home, won 2-1 away at Sabah FK in the Champions League, drew 0-0 at Union Berlin, lost 0-1 at Bodø/Glimt in the Champions League and drew 2-2 with Werder Bremen at home. That run contains two clean wins, two draws and a defeat, and only one of the five games produced more than two goals for Dortmund.
That pattern, narrow wins and low-scoring away games, is a reasonable argument for a tight contest. The model still prefers Bayern, and we will grade the prediction publicly once the match is played.
What it means
Dortmund sit second in the Bundesliga with 17 points from 7 games, having won five and drawn two without a defeat. They have scored 12 goals and conceded 4, which marks them out as one of the most solid sides in the division. The two draws, 2-2 with Werder Bremen and 0-0 at Union Berlin, are the only league points they have dropped.
The form says Dortmund are hard to beat but not always prolific. Their latest league win was by a single goal, and their last away league game ended goalless. Mixed in are a Champions League win at Sabah FK and a narrow loss at Bodø/Glimt, so the picture across competitions is good but not flawless.
The next fixture asks the biggest question of that record. Bayern v Dortmund on 31 October is a test of whether a defence that has conceded four goals in seven league games can hold up against the team it is level with on points. The site’s forecast of Bayern to win, with a predicted score of 3-1, says it probably cannot hold firm for the full ninety minutes. A Dortmund win would still be a statement, as it would take the top of the table. Even a draw would extend the unbeaten league run to eight games and keep the pressure on Bayern.
