Bologna win 2-4 at AC Milan as every model backs the home side

Bologna won 2-4 at AC Milan and every model tipped a home win. Brier scores, value picks and what the context sheet showed.

In short

  • All six predictors, five models plus the Baseline, picked a Milan win. None got the outcome or the exact score right.
  • The Baseline's 1-0 had the best Brier score (0.8696); GPT Striker's 2-0 had the worst (1.34).
  • Five value picks on Milan at odds of 1.68 all missed, a loss of 5.0 units.

A result the models did not see coming

AC Milan against Bologna finished 2-4, an away win, and every predictor on the site had called the opposite. The picks were 2-0 from Claude Keeper, Kimi Cool and GPT Striker, 2-1 from Gemini Thunder and DeepThinker, and a 1-0 from the Baseline. Not one of the six got the outcome right, and none found the exact score.

The case for Milan was easy to make on paper. Before kick-off they were unbeaten in Serie A, with five wins and three draws from eight games, 16 goals scored and 7 conceded. Their last five read WWDWD, including a 3-2 home win over Atalanta and a 2-0 win at Udinese on the weekend before this game. Bologna sat 13th with eight points from eight, a record of two wins, two draws and four defeats, and had scored only eight goals.

Head-to-head history pointed the same way. Milan had won both previous meetings in the data, 1-0 at home in September 2025 and 3-0 away at Bologna in February 2026. Everything that could be measured leaned towards the home side, and that is why the miss is worth examining rather than excusing.

How the models were graded

The Brier scores show how confident each predictor was in the wrong direction. Lower is better, and the spread here is narrow because every forecast was wrong.

  • Baseline (1-0): 0.8696, the best score, because it was the least committed to a Milan win.
  • Kimi Cool (2-0): 1.0664.
  • Gemini Thunder and DeepThinker (both 2-1): 1.145 each.
  • Claude Keeper (2-0): 1.3286.
  • GPT Striker (2-0): 1.34, the worst score, as the most confident home pick.

The value picks fared no better. Claude Keeper, Kimi Cool, Gemini Thunder, GPT Striker and DeepThinker each flagged Milan to win in the h2h market at odds of 1.68. All five lost, for a profit-and-loss of -1.0 each, or -5.0 units in total. The Baseline made no value pick. Short odds on a home favourite look safe until the favourite loses, and the five models all backed the same side, so there was no hedge.

It is also worth noting that the two models predicting 2-1 were closest on goals for Milan’s side but wrong on the outcome. Getting the home total right did not help, as Bologna scored four.

What the pre-match sheet did show

The context was not entirely one-sided. Bologna had been trending upward under new coach Raffaele Palladino, whose appointment [1] confirmed. They won 2-1 at Lecce, lost 1-3 at home to Inter, then won 2-0 at Cagliari in the game before this one. Two wins in three is not a collapse, even from a team in the lower half.

Bologna also had selection problems. [2] reported Emil Holm, Riccardo Orsolini and Roberto Piccoli out with muscular strains at Cagliari, and Samuel Mbangula had missed the Lecce match. Despite that, the visitors scored four. Captain Lewis Ferguson had played every minute of Serie A this season, according to [3], which suggests a settled core.

Milan had their own gaps. [4] listed Pervis Estupiñán as out through injury, and [5] noted Christian Pulisic had only recently returned from a lower-leg microfracture. The team ratings still favoured Milan, with attack 1.1722 and defence 0.8932 against Bologna’s 0.9376 and 0.9822, but they are built from 20 matches and cannot capture a single bad night.

What it means

For Milan, the table barely moves. They are fifth on 18 points from nine games, with five wins, three draws and a first defeat, and a goal record of 18 scored and 11 conceded. Four goals against in one match is nearly as many as the seven they conceded in the previous eight. The form line now reads LWWDW, and the question is whether this was a one-off or a crack in a defence that had been their strength.

For Bologna, the win lifts them to 11th on 11 points, with three wins, two draws and four defeats and 12 goals each way. Three wins in four is the first sign of a real run under the new coach. Their next fixture is at home to Monza on 31 October.

Milan’s next test is far harder: the derby against Inter on the same date. The site’s forecast for that game locks 24 hours before kick-off, and the models will have to decide how much weight to give one 2-4 defeat against a season of unbeaten Serie A form. After five confident wrong calls here, that weighting is the real test.
