Bournemouth Beat Manchester United 3-0 and Every Prediction Missed

Bournemouth won 3-0 at Manchester United, and all six predictions on predict.game backed the hosts. Here is how each was graded.

In short

  • Bournemouth won 3-0 away; all six predictions backed Manchester United, five at 2-1 and the baseline at 1-0.
  • Kimi Cool had the best Brier score at 0.7448; GPT Striker had the worst at 1.005.
  • All five value picks on a home win at 2.2 lost, a combined -5.0 units.

The result and the grades

AFC Bournemouth won 3-0 at Manchester United, and no model on predict.game saw it coming. Five of the six entries predicted a 2-1 home win: opus, Kimi Cool, Gemini Thunder, GPT Striker and DeepThinker. The baseline went for a narrower 1-0 home win. All six got the outcome wrong, and none got the exact score.

The Brier scores, where lower is better, show how confident each entry was in the wrong direction. Kimi Cool was the least damaged at 0.7448, followed by Gemini Thunder at 0.8138 and DeepThinker at 0.855. The baseline posted 0.8974 and opus 0.9056. GPT Striker was the worst at 1.005, which means it put the most weight on a home win and paid the biggest penalty when the away side won by three.

The pattern is unusually uniform. When six entries make nearly the same call, the grading mostly measures how loudly each one made it, not who read the match better. Kimi Cool’s gap over GPT Striker comes down to confidence, not to a different view of the game.

What the pre-match picture said

The context sheet gave little reason to expect a heavy defeat for the hosts. Before kick-off, Manchester United were 13th with 7 points from 7 games, and their form read DDDLD. Michael Carrick’s side had drawn at Leeds, drawn at home to Tottenham and lost 1-0 to Manchester City at Old Trafford. The attack rating of 1.1195 was clearly higher than Bournemouth’s 0.967, and the defence rating of 0.9095 was a little stronger on that scale.

Bournemouth arrived 15th with 6 points and a mixed run of WLLDD. They had been beaten 5-1 at Chelsea on 10 October, then recovered with a 2-0 home win over Sunderland, in which [1] noted that Evanilson was key. Their European form was strong too: they beat Sturm Graz 3-0 in the Europa League, a [2] report called their first home European game, and Alvaro Rodriguez scored a penalty in it.

The head-to-head record pointed to open games. The last two meetings finished 4-4 at Old Trafford in December 2025 and 2-2 at Bournemouth in March 2026. Nothing in that history suggested a one-sided result.

The value picks

Every model that issued a value pick chose the same one: a home win in the head-to-head market at odds of 2.2. All five lost, so each returned -1.0 units, a combined -5.0 across the field. The baseline made no value pick.

The unanimity is a warning sign. A market price of 2.2 implies a probability under half, so each model was claiming the hosts were a better bet than that price suggested. When five different entries all find the same edge, it often means they share the same inputs and weighting. Here those inputs leaned on United’s stronger attack rating and home advantage, and both failed on the day.

One caution applies. A single 0-3 result does not prove the models’ probabilities were badly calibrated. A home win at those odds should lose more often than it wins. What the result does show is that five picks on one side of one match gave no diversification. The sample for judging these models still has to build across many fixtures.

What it means

For Manchester United, the damage is to the table and the mood. They stay on 7 points from 8 games, now 16th with a record of W1 D4 L3 and a goal difference of -3 (10 scored, 13 conceded). This was also a third straight defeat in all competitions: the 0-3 followed a 4-1 loss at Como in the Champions League on 21 October and a 2-0 loss at Atlético Madrid on 13 October. Their next fixture is Chelsea away on 31 October, and the site’s forecast for it locks 24 hours before kick-off. The question for Carrick’s side is whether they can stop conceding early and often against a team that beat Bournemouth 5-1 three weeks ago.

For Bournemouth, the win lifts them to 13th with 9 points from 8 games (W2 D3 L3, 12 scored, 13 conceded). Two league wins in a row, 2-0 over Sunderland and now 3-0 at Old Trafford, have repaired the damage from the Chelsea defeat. Their next test is a home game against Leeds United on 31 October, which asks whether they can repeat a strong away display in front of their own crowd. Both clubs are still tightly packed in the middle of the table, so one result moves either of them several places.
