In short

  • Union Berlin 1-1 Köln was a draw, and all five forecasters called the outcome wrong; none had the exact score.
  • DeepThinker had the best Brier score (0.735), the Baseline the worst (0.8721).
  • All three value picks lost, for a combined -3.0 units.

A point apiece in Berlin

The final score at Union Berlin was 1-1, a fourth draw in eight league games for the hosts and a third for Köln. Neither side was in form coming in. Union’s recent run read DDWLL, and their latest outings were a 1-1 draw at Augsburg and a goalless home draw with Borussia Dortmund. Köln arrived with a 0-0 home draw against Schalke and a 1-0 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt behind them, after beating Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-1 on 11 October.

That Gladbach win was the high point of Köln’s autumn. [1] reported the line-up with Marius Bülter, Ísak Bergmann Jóhannesson, Sebastian Sebulonsen and Borna Sosa all starting. Said El Mala scored the goal that made it 2-1. The same day [2] had already described Köln’s start to the season as shaky. A draw in Berlin extends a pattern of tight, low-scoring games for both clubs: Union’s last five league results produced only six goals scored in total, and Köln’s recent matches have rarely been open.

The 1-1 result matched the pre-match numbers more closely than any of the forecasts did. The two sides were separated by very little in the site’s team ratings, and the outcome reflected that.

How the models graded

Nobody called the draw. Claude Keeper went for an away win at 1-2, while Gemini Thunder and GPT Striker both backed a 2-1 home win. DeepThinker picked a narrower 1-0 for Union, and the Baseline also chose 2-1 to the hosts. All five missed the outcome and none found the exact score.

The Brier scores, where lower is better, show how confident each forecaster was in the wrong direction:

  • DeepThinker: 0.735
  • GPT Striker: 0.755
  • Gemini Thunder: 0.7574
  • Claude Keeper: 0.7784
  • Baseline: 0.8721

DeepThinker came out best, probably because it was the most restrained pick and left more probability on a low-scoring game. The Baseline was the most exposed, committing hardest to a home win.

Three forecasters also flagged value picks, and all three lost. Claude Keeper backed the away side at odds of 2.51, while Gemini Thunder and GPT Striker both backed the home side at 2.625. Each lost a unit, so the combined profit and loss was -3.0. DeepThinker and the Baseline did not submit a value pick. A draw was never among the selections, so no value pick could have landed on the actual result.

What the pre-match picture said

The pre-match data pointed toward a close game, even if the models leaned home. Union’s rating showed an attack of 0.8008 and a defence of 1.1967. Köln’s was 0.8326 and 1.1035. Köln had the slightly better numbers at both ends, which makes the home-heavy consensus look generous to Union, who also had the worse goal difference going in.

The head-to-head record offered little separation either. Köln hosted Union on 20 December 2025 and lost 1-0, and the return fixture on 2 May 2026 finished 2-2. Two meetings, one Union win and one draw, never suggested a comfortable margin for either side.

Team news cut both ways. Union added Emmanuel Latte Lath on loan, as [3] reported on 24 October. Köln had named Alexander Blessin as coach, per [2], but [4] listed Ragnar Ache and Thijs Dallinga as injured in mid-October. With Köln short of options up front and Union still settling, a low-scoring draw was a realistic outcome that the models underweighted.

What it means

For Union Berlin the point lifts them to 16th in the Bundesliga on 7 points from 8 games, with one win, four draws and three defeats. Their goal record of 7 scored and 19 conceded is the stark number, and the 0-7 loss at Bayern München on 18 September accounts for a large share of it. Since then they have lost none of their last four, so the form line is steadier than the table suggests. The next fixture is away at Freiburg on 8 November, which asks whether a side that has stopped conceding heavily can start turning draws into wins.

Köln are 12th on 9 points from 8, with two wins, three draws and three defeats and a goal record of 9 for and 12 against. Back-to-back draws, a 0-0 with Schalke and now 1-1 in Berlin, followed a defeat at Frankfurt and show a team that is hard to beat but short of goals. Their next game is at home to Leverkusen on 8 November, a far sterner test, and it will show whether Blessin’s side can hold their shape against stronger opposition.

The site’s forecasts for both games lock 24 hours before kick-off. After a round in which every model missed, they will be graded in public like the rest.
