Union Berlin: harder to beat than their table spot suggests
Union Berlin go into matchday 8 in 17th place with six points from seven games: one win, three draws and three defeats. The goal numbers are lopsided, with six scored and 18 conceded. A large part of that deficit comes from the 7-0 defeat at Bayern Munich on 18 September, which followed a 3-1 home loss to Schalke a week earlier.
Since then the picture has steadied. Union beat Elversberg 1-0 at home, held Borussia Dortmund to a 0-0 draw, and then took a 1-1 draw at Augsburg on 24 October. That is three games without defeat, although only one of them produced a win. The recent form string reads DDWLL, with the latest result listed first.
There is also a possible attacking boost. [1] reports that Emmanuel Latte Lath has joined Union on loan, which matters for a side whose attack rating of 0.80 is among the weakest in this fixture’s data. The recent lineup facts also show a settled core, with Frederik Rønnow in goal and Leopold Querfeld and Christopher Trimmel among those who have started, according to [2].
Köln: a new coach, a lost striker and a stalled run
Köln are 14th with eight points from seven games (two wins, two draws, three defeats) and a goal difference of 8 scored to 11 conceded. Their ratings are slightly better than Union’s at the back (1.10 against 1.20), while the attacks are almost level at 0.83 and 0.80.
A change on the touchline has marked their season. [3] reports Alexander Blessin as the club’s new coach, and his first match brought a 2-1 home win over Borussia Mönchengladbach on 11 October. Said El Mala scored the goal that made it 2-1, per [4].
Since that win, though, the results have been thin: a 1-0 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt and a goalless home draw with Schalke. That is one point and no goals from two games. The bigger concern is the squad. [5] lists both Ragnar Ache and Thijs Dallinga as injured, which removes two forward options. Marius Bülter, Ísak Bergmann Jóhannesson, Sebastian Sebulonsen and Borna Sosa all got the nod in the Gladbach win, so the structure around the front line is fairly clear.
Head-to-head and what the models say
The last two meetings were close. Union won 1-0 at Köln on 20 December 2025, and the sides drew 2-2 at the Alten Försterei on 2 May 2026. Neither side has been able to pull clear of the other.
The site’s Poisson baseline, built from recorded results, expects 1.63 goals for Union and 1.44 for Köln. It gives Union a 42.2% chance of a win, a draw 23.9% and Köln 33.9%. The most likely single scoreline is 1-1, and both teams scoring comes out at 61.3%, with over 2.5 goals at 59.1%.
The four AI models are split on the margins:
- GPT Striker: 2-1 Union, with 45% home, 30% draw, 25% away, citing home advantage and Köln’s injuries.
- Gemini Thunder: 2-1 Union, with 38% home, 29% draw, 33% away, pointing to Union’s recent home results and Köln’s weakened attack.
- DeepThinker: 1-0 Union, with 35% home, 30% draw, 35% away, the most cautious of the home picks.
- Claude Keeper: 1-2 Köln, with 34% home, 28% draw, 38% away, arguing that Union’s goals-against figure of 18 outweighs home advantage.
Three home picks and one away pick is not a strong consensus. The draw probabilities of 24% to 30% across the models show how little separates these teams.
What it means
For Union, 17th place and six points from seven games means this is already a game they cannot afford to treat as routine. Three unbeaten matches show some resilience, but a single win all season and a goal difference of minus 12 explain why the table looks so grim. A home win would lift them level with Köln on nine points against eight, so the table is tight enough that one result moves them noticeably.
For Köln, 14th with eight points, the form string DLWLD says the Gladbach win has not turned into a run. One point from the last two games, with no goals scored, and the absence of Ache and Dallinga make this a test of whether Blessin’s side can create enough without their usual forwards. A win would be their first away from home in this stretch of data.
The forecast is the site’s baseline: a narrow Union edge at 42.2%, with a 1-1 draw as the single likeliest score and a 2-1 home win the likeliest score if Union do win. Both teams scoring is the more confident read, at 61.3%. A fixture between the 14th and 17th teams, with these attacking numbers, looks more likely to be decided by one goal than to be a comfortable win either way.
