A late collapse at Mestalla
Valencia’s home defeat to Villarreal had a cruel shape. According to [1], Valencia lost 2-1 and conceded the winning goal at 96’, even though they had a numerical advantage after Villarreal’s Pape Gueye was sent off. A one-man edge should have helped them see out a point at least, and it did the opposite.
Villarreal came from behind to win the derby. [2] describes the left-back as man of the match, scoring the equaliser that turned the game. Valencia could not hold on after that.
The result also fits a longer pattern at home. Marca notes that Valencia have won only once in their last nine league matches at Mestalla. The club’s own records show the recent sequence: a 0-0 draw with Athletic Club on 17 October, a 2-3 loss to Real Sociedad on 20 September, and now this defeat. The one league win this season came away, 1-0 at Deportivo Alavés on 15 September. A stadium that should be a source of points has become a source of frustration.
Elliott’s red card and a difficult dressing room
The other talking point is Harvey Elliott’s dismissal. [3] that he was sent off for repeatedly protesting a referee decision. The input places the red card in the 93rd minute, and Villarreal’s winner followed in added time. Elliott publicly apologised and said it would not happen again. The same report does not state the length of any suspension, so the safest reading is that he is likely to miss the next match, with the exact ban unconfirmed.
The mood in the squad is sober. In a [4], midfielder Guido Rodríguez acknowledged the poor start and said he needs to improve personally. He is also analysing his physical situation after an earlier injury. He questioned the team’s possession and physical condition, and insisted that Valencia will not give up despite the current difficulties.
That honesty is useful, but it also shows how little margin the squad has. A player publicly doubting his own fitness and the team’s physical level, in the same week as a late red card, suggests a group still searching for stability.
A new coach and a club for sale
The sporting problems come with a change on the bench. [1] that Javier Aguirre replaced Carlos Corberán about a month ago and has managed three matches so far. That is a small sample, and the derby defeat was the latest of them. A coach who has had little time on the training ground is still trying to impose a way of playing, and a late collapse at home will not help.
The backdrop off the pitch is just as unsettled. [5] that Valencia CF has officially announced the club is for sale. That ends the speculation around Peter Lim’s ownership and marks a shift from previous denials. The announcement does not change the league table, but it adds uncertainty around a squad already short of confidence.
None of this excuses the results, yet it frames them. A new coach, a club on the market and a run without home wins is a hard combination for any group of players to manage at the same time.
What it means
The table is blunt. Valencia are 19th in La Liga with 6 points from 10 games, with one win, three draws and six defeats. They have scored 7 and conceded 17, a goal difference of -10. The defence is the clearest problem, and the Villarreal game showed it again by conceding at 96’ against ten men.
The form line offers little comfort: L, D, D, L, W across the last five league games, newest first. Two of those results are draws and the only win is the 1-0 at Alavés. The side can scrape a point, as in the 2-2 at Racing Santander, but cannot yet turn that into wins.
The next fixture is Elche away on 1 November. It asks whether Valencia can play a complete match without a late lapse, and probably without Elliott in midfield, as his suspension is likely but unconfirmed. The site’s forecast for that game locks 24 hours before kick-off, so no prediction is published here yet. For Aguirre, the question is simple: can a team with the worst defensive record in this context start to protect what it has? Another result like Saturday’s would make the gap to safety harder to close.
