A draw that kept the top two level
The Bundesliga’s first against second ended 2-2 on 31 October, and the table barely moved. Bayern and Dortmund both finished the night on 18 points from eight games, each with five wins, three draws and no defeats. Bayern stay first on 27 goals scored and 8 conceded; Dortmund are second on 14 scored and 6 conceded.
The match did not break a pattern for either side. Bayern had taken a draw at Augsburg earlier in the month and then beaten Leipzig 6-1 and Freiburg 3-1 away. Dortmund came in after a 2-2 with Werder Bremen, a goalless draw at Union Berlin and a 1-0 home win over Eintracht Frankfurt. Both teams were unbeaten in the league before kick-off, so a share of the points fits what each had been doing.
The head-to-head record gave little reason to expect a stalemate. Bayern won both previous meetings in the input: 2-1 at home in October 2025 and 3-2 in Dortmund on 28 February 2026. Both were close, one-goal games, which is consistent with a contest that stayed tight this time too.
Why the models leaned Bayern
The pre-match picture explains the consensus. Bayern’s [1] coverage that autumn was full of praise for the attack, and the numbers backed it. The site’s team rating gave Bayern an attack figure of 1.7914 against 1.0598 for Dortmund. Over their last five games before this one Bayern scored 20 goals, including a 7-0 against Union Berlin, while Dortmund scored seven.
Dortmund had real strengths too. Their defence rating of 0.6432 was lower than Bayern’s 0.7677, and they had not lost in the league. Coach Niko Kovač’s [2] had been confirmed shortly beforehand, according to Kicker. Giannis Konstantelias was listed as injured in [3] reporting that month.
Bayern also carried individual form. Michael Olise, Luis Díaz and Dayot Upamecano were all named on the [4] nominations covered by Bundesliga.com. Put together, a home win with two or three goals looked the sensible call, and every predictor made it. None allowed enough room for Dortmund to score twice.
How the predictions were graded
Every forecast failed on the outcome and the exact score. Claude Keeper predicted 2-0. Kimi Cool, Gemini Thunder, GPT Striker and DeepThinker all predicted 3-1. Baseline predicted 2-1. The Brier scores show how confidently each one missed:
- Baseline: 1.0273
- DeepThinker: 1.085
- Kimi Cool: 1.1354
- Gemini Thunder: 1.1768
- Claude Keeper: 1.2008
- GPT Striker: 1.235
Lower is better, so Baseline’s more cautious distribution cost it least. GPT Striker, the most confident in a Bayern win, paid the most. The scores sit close together, which fits a result all six models called the same way.
The value picks also failed. Claude Keeper, Kimi Cool, GPT Striker and DeepThinker each backed Bayern to win at odds of 1.33, and each lost one unit. Gemini Thunder was the only model to go against the favourite, taking Dortmund to win at 8.0. A draw meant that lost a unit too. Baseline made no value pick. A 2-2 draw therefore returned nothing across the board.
What it means
The table now reads Bayern first and Dortmund second, both on 18 points from eight games with five wins, three draws and no losses. Bayern’s goal difference of plus 19 (27 scored, 8 conceded) is well ahead of Dortmund’s plus 8 (14 scored, 6 conceded), so Bayern would lead on that tiebreak alone. Neither side has lost a league game, and both now have three draws.
The form line points the same way for each. Bayern’s last five games in all competitions were a 2-2 with Dortmund, a 3-1 win at Freiburg, a 2-2 with Arsenal in the Champions League, a 6-1 win over Leipzig and a 3-3 draw at Viking. Dortmund’s were this draw, a 1-0 win over Frankfurt, a 2-1 win at Sabah, a 0-0 at Union Berlin and a 1-0 loss at Bodø/Glimt. Bayern are scoring freely and also conceding in Europe. Dortmund are tighter but less prolific.
The next fixtures ask different questions. Bayern visit Atlético on 3 November in the Champions League, a test of whether their open style survives a defensive opponent. Dortmund host Real Betis the next day, where they will want a European result after the Bodø/Glimt loss. The site’s forecasts for both games lock 24 hours before kick-off, so they are not yet published.
