Two unbeaten sides, one point of separation in nothing
The Allianz Arena hosts the biggest fixture of Bundesliga matchday 8 on Saturday 31 October, with kick-off at 17:30 UTC. FC Bayern München and Borussia Dortmund arrive first and second in the table, both unbeaten, both on 17 points from seven games. Each has won five and drawn two. Only goal difference separates them: Bayern’s 25 scored and 6 conceded against Dortmund’s 12 and 4.
The recent form strings are close. Bayern’s reads WWDWW, Dortmund’s WDDWW. Vincent Kompany’s side won 3-1 at Freiburg on 25 October, after a 6-1 home win over RB Leipzig on 17 October. In between came a 2-2 draw at Augsburg. Earlier results in the five-game run include a 7-0 home win over Union Berlin and a 2-1 win at Elversberg.
Dortmund’s run under Niko Kovač is quieter but just as unbeaten. They beat Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 at home on 24 October, drew 0-0 at Union Berlin, and drew 2-2 with Werder Bremen at home on 9 October. Before that came a 1-0 win at Stuttgart, where [1] reports Maximilian Beier scored the decisive goal. Kovač’s contract has also been extended, [2] reports, which gives the club some stability going into the trip to Munich.
Bayern’s firepower against Dortmund’s resistance
The numbers say this is a contest between the league’s most prolific attack and one of its tightest defences. Bayern’s attacking rating in the site’s model is 1.79, well above Dortmund’s 1.06, and their 25 goals in seven games back that up. Dortmund have conceded only four, though, and have kept clean sheets in their last two wins. A goalless draw at Union Berlin shows they can also be hard to break down away from home.
Bayern’s squad has plenty of reasons for confidence. Michael Olise, Luis Díaz and Dayot Upamecano are all on the Ballon d’Or nominee list, [3] notes. Summer arrivals such as Nathaniel Brown from Eintracht Frankfurt have been in the starting XI, and Ismael Saibari was signed to give [4] says another option in attack. Bayern also shared a six-goal thriller with Viking in the Champions League, a reminder that they have conceded in games where they score freely.
Dortmund have their own selection issues. Giannis Konstantelias is listed as injured, according to [5], which also says Joey Veerman brings composure and good ball distribution to the attack. Daniel Svensson scored in the Bremen draw, and Konstantinos Karetsas and Samuele Inácio started in a Champions League defeat at Bodø/Glimt, so Kovač has options in midfield and wide areas.
What the models say
The Poisson baseline, built from recorded results, expects 2.14 goals for Bayern and 1.17 for Dortmund. That translates to a 59.4% home win, 20.4% draw and 20.2% away win. Its most likely score is 2-1, with both teams scoring at 60.9% and over 2.5 goals at 64.2%.
All five AI models pick Bayern, and all are more bullish than the baseline:
- Claude Keeper: 2-0, with a 72% home win chance.
- Kimi Cool: 3-1, 68%.
- Gemini Thunder: 3-1, 70%.
- GPT Striker: 3-1, 70%.
- DeepThinker: 3-1, 65%.
Four of five forecast 3-1, so the models agree Dortmund will score but not enough to take points. The case rests on Bayern’s attack, home advantage and the head-to-head record. Draw probabilities range from 15% to 20%, and away-win chances from 10% to 15%. The baseline gives Dortmund a bigger chance of an upset than any of the models does.
What it means
The head-to-head record favours Bayern. They won 2-1 at home on 18 October 2025, then won 3-2 at Dortmund on 28 February 2026. Both matches were close, and both had goals at each end, which fits the baseline’s 60.9% both-teams-to-score figure.
For Bayern, a win would take them to 20 points and open a three-point gap on their closest rival. A draw would leave the table as it is, with the two unbeaten sides level on points. For Dortmund, a point in Munich would extend their unbeaten run to eight league games, and a win would put them top.
The forecasts expect Bayern to take it, most likely by two goals. Dortmund’s defensive record and their ability to nick narrow results, such as the 1-0 wins over Stuttgart and Frankfurt, are the main reasons the baseline stays below 60% for the hosts. The result will test whether Bayern’s attacking numbers hold up against a side that has conceded just four times.
