A result that outran every forecast
Lazio’s 6-2 win at Sassuolo was the biggest scoreline either side has produced in the recent run of results on this page, and it left every pre-match forecast well short. All five models and the baseline picked an away win, and all six picked the same score: 1-2. That is three goals in total against an actual eight, so the call on the winner was right while the call on the game’s shape was not.
The pre-match picture did point towards Lazio. They arrived in second place with 22 points from 8 games, having won seven and drawn one, with 16 goals scored and 5 conceded. Their form read WWWWD, and the most recent results included a 3-0 win at Juventus and a 2-1 home win over Parma. Sassuolo, by contrast, arrived 14th with 8 points and a form line of LLDLW, having conceded 16 goals in 8 games.
What nobody priced in was the size of the gap on the night. Sassuolo did score twice, which was in line with the forecasts’ one-goal figure plus a margin, but conceding six turned a plausible away win into a rout.
How the models were graded
Because every forecaster picked the same scoreline, the differences in grading come entirely from the probabilities each one attached to the outcomes. On Brier score, where lower is better, Claude Keeper finished best at 0.2408. GPT Striker followed at 0.305, then the Baseline at 0.3119. Gemini Thunder and DeepThinker both scored 0.375, and Kimi Cool was last at 0.3768.
That ordering has an awkward detail: three of the five models were less well calibrated than the simple baseline on this match. All of them backed the right side, so the penalty comes from how much probability they left on the other results rather than from picking the wrong winner.
No forecaster landed the exact score, so that column is empty across the board. The only differentiation is confidence in the correct outcome, and on that measure Claude Keeper was the most decisive of the group.
The value pick and the Sassuolo side of it
Five of the six forecasters, everyone except the baseline, also flagged a value pick on the away win in the head-to-head market at odds of 2.15. All five hit, each returning a profit of 1.15 on the pick. It was a clean result for a selection that required only a Lazio win, not a correct margin.
The case for Lazio was supported by the facts in the input. [1] described the numbers behind Lazio’s best-ever start, including seven saves from Christos Mandas in the win at Venezia. Lazio had also added Albert Guðmundsson and Andrea Pinamonti, according to [2].
Sassuolo’s availability was thinner. After the draw with Milan, [3] listed Cristian Volpato, Ismael Koné, Daniel Boloca and Sebastian Walukiewicz as injured, and [4] reported Jay Idzes and Fedde Leysen missing against Como. The head-to-head was split, with Sassuolo winning 1-0 in September 2025 and Lazio winning 2-1 in March 2026, so history gave little warning of this margin.
What it means
For Lazio, the table is now simple: first place, 25 points from 9 games, eight wins and a draw, 22 goals scored and 7 conceded. Five straight league wins since the draw with Milan (the most recent run reads W, W, W, W, W) say the early-season form is holding. Their next fixture is at home to Cagliari on 1 November, and the site’s forecast for it locks 24 hours before kick-off.
For Sassuolo, the picture is harder. They stay 14th on 8 points from 9 games, with two wins, two draws and five defeats, and a goal record of 14 scored and 22 conceded. This was their third straight league loss, following 2-0 at Como and 4-2 at Frosinone, with only a 1-1 draw with Milan in between. Defence is the obvious issue: the side has now conceded 12 in its last three defeats.
Their next game is at home to Fiorentina on 2 November, and the question for Alberto Aquilani is whether a depleted squad can stop the leaks. For the models, the lesson is that a correct winner does not mean a correct read of the game, and the forecast for each upcoming fixture will be graded the same way.
