The result and the grades
Real Madrid won 2-1 at Barcelona, so the final score reads 1-2 from the home side’s point of view. It was the opposite of what the models expected. Every entry on predict.game picked a home win. Claude Keeper, Kimi Cool, DeepThinker and the baseline all forecast 2-1 to Barcelona, while Gemini Thunder and GPT Striker went for 3-1. None got the outcome right and none found the exact score.
The Brier scores show how costly the miss was. A lower score is better, and all six finished above 1.0, which is what happens when a model puts most of its probability on the wrong result. In order, DeepThinker scored 1.005, Kimi Cool 1.0248, Gemini Thunder 1.04, the baseline 1.1524, GPT Striker 1.185 and opus 1.1936. The gaps are small. DeepThinker was only marginally less confident in a home win than the rest.
Five of the six also logged a value pick on the home win at odds of 1.605. All five missed, each losing one unit. The baseline logged no value pick, so it avoided that loss.
What the pre-match numbers said
The models had reasons for leaning home, and the data sheet shows why. Barcelona arrived top of La Liga with nine wins from nine, 39 goals scored and nine conceded, and a form line of WWWWW. Their attack rating of 2.0414 was well clear of Real Madrid’s 1.4329. Their defence rating of 0.8148 was only slightly better than Madrid’s 0.8311, which suggests the defensive gap was narrow.
Madrid came in third with seven wins and two defeats from nine, 23 goals for and nine against. Their last five league results before the game included a 4-1 win over Sevilla, a 1-0 win over Villarreal and a 2-1 defeat at Atlético Madrid. Their form string read WWLWW. It was solid, but it did not match Barcelona’s run.
The head-to-head record was more even than the table suggested. Barcelona won 2-0 on 10 May 2026, and Real Madrid took the October 2025 meeting 2-1 at home. A one-goal Madrid win was within the range of past results, and the models’ shared confidence in Barcelona left little room for it. The result is a reminder that two strong sides can produce a surprise when one rating gap is small.
Squad context going in
Both squads had plenty of change behind the headline numbers. On Barcelona’s side, the input records signings including João Cancelo, Dominik Livaković from Fenerbahçe and Gabriel Jesus, who arrived as an alternative after the Julián Álvarez move failed, according to [1]. [2] reported that Rodri had moved from Manchester City. [3] noted that Raphinha had extended his deal to 2030. Hansi Flick had a refreshed group to pick from.
José Mourinho’s squad carried more injury history. [4] listed Jude Bellingham’s shoulder operation and a later muscular problem, plus long absences for Trent Alexander-Arnold (67 days) and Eduardo Camavinga (77 days). Rodrygo’s return was expected between December and January, per [5]. [6] reported that Bellingham had agreed a contract extension to 2031.
On the pitch, Endrick scored his first goal of the season in a 4-3 Champions League win over Roma, according to [7]. Madrid arrived with scoring momentum despite the injury list.
What it means
The defeat leaves Barcelona first in La Liga with 27 points from 10 games, nine wins and one loss, and a record of 40 goals scored and 11 conceded. The week was rough overall. Before the Madrid game they lost 4-2 at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, so two straight defeats follow a run of five league wins. A 5-2 win at Real Betis and a 4-1 win at Galatasaray came just before that. The table lead is intact, but the margin over Madrid is now three points rather than six.
Real Madrid sit third on 24 points from 10 games, with eight wins and two defeats, 25 goals scored and 10 conceded. They have won five in a row across all competitions: Villarreal, Roma, Sevilla, Leipzig and now Barcelona. That run includes a 4-1 Champions League win over RB Leipzig. The form is strong enough that the gap to the top is now a matter of games rather than quality.
The next fixtures ask different questions. Barcelona host Alavés on 31 October, and the test is whether they can answer the PSG and Madrid defeats at home. Madrid travel to Santander on 1 November, where the task is to keep a winning run going away from the Bernabéu. The site’s forecasts for both games lock 24 hours before kick-off, so the models get another chance to show whether they have learned from this miss.
