A depleted squad for a derby trip
Málaga went into the Andalusian derby at Real Betis in a difficult position. [1] described them as bottom of LaLiga and still without a win this season. The squad news did little to help. According to a [2], Joaquín Muñoz, Julen Lobete, Aarón Ochoa, Juan Cruz and Pablo Martínez were all out.
A second [3] from the final training session on Friday confirmed the same five remained outside the group. That is a lot of absentees for a team that needs options. It also meant the coach had little room for rotation in a match where the opponent had a historic start to the season, as Marca put it.
There was one more concern. Ángel Recio did not train on Friday because of a viral illness, and his place in the squad was to be assessed until the last minute. The reports give no indication of how likely he was to recover in time, so he stayed a genuine doubt rather than a probable absence.
Murillo back, mood positive
The squad news was not all negative. Diego Murillo completed the full training session with the group ahead of the trip, which gave the staff one more fit player for the weekend. The reports do not say what role he might have, and it would be speculation to guess.
The mood around the squad was also described as positive after midweek. Málaga won their Copa del Rey match against Sporting de Alcázar on Wednesday, according to [3]. That was a cup tie, so it does not change the league picture. A winless side can still use a victory of any kind to lift confidence, and the training-ground tone reflected that.
The distinction matters for reading the season. Málaga had not won in the league, but they were not coming off a cup defeat. Even so, a cup win over lower-level opposition tells us little about how a team copes at a ground like La Cartuja, against a side that had just lost to Barcelona and drawn with Celta.
Betis: busy start, own absentees
Betis were not at full strength either. In his pre-match comments, as summarised by [4], coach Manuel Pellegrini said Junior Firpo was ruled out for now. Antony had recovered from a viral illness and would be in the squad. Aitor Ruibal was fully fit again, and Cucho Hernández’s availability was still being monitored.
The other [2] listed Cucho Hernández, Firpo and Facundo Bernal as missing. It also noted that Betis had dropped points recently, with a defeat to Barcelona and a draw with Celta. That is the context in which Málaga could hope for something from the game: a home side with some recent slips and a few absences of its own.
There was also a personal milestone. Isco was due to reach 400 top-flight appearances in the match, according to [1]. The derby carried some sentiment for that reason alone, though sentiment rarely changes the balance of a match. Betis still held the clearer advantage in availability and form heading into the afternoon.
What it means
The site’s records show the result: Málaga lost 1-2 at Betis. That leaves them 20th in LaLiga with 5 points from 11 matches. The record is no wins, five draws and six defeats, with 8 goals scored and 21 conceded.
The form line is the more telling number. Of their last five league games, Málaga lost three and drew two. The defeats came against Getafe (0-1), Real Sociedad (2-5 at home) and now Betis (1-2). The draws were 1-1 at home to Espanyol and 1-1 away at Alavés. The side can score and can hold a point, but conceding 21 goals in 11 games is what keeps them at the bottom.
The next fixture asks a different question. Málaga host Santander on 7 November, back at home after two away league games in a row. After two wins’ worth of draws without a victory, the match is about turning a draw-heavy profile into three points. The site’s forecast for it locks 24 hours before kick-off, so there is no published prediction yet.
The squad news is what to watch. If the five absentees remain out and Recio’s illness lingers, the margin for error stays thin. If Murillo’s return is followed by others coming back, the defensive record has a chance to improve. Until then, the table says that Málaga need a win more than any other side in the division.
