A first league defeat at Aston Villa
Manchester City’s perfect Premier League start ended on 24 October, when Aston Villa won 2-1. According to [1], Nicolas Jackson scored twice for Villa, while Erling Haaland scored City’s only goal. Both Haaland and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma were in City’s expected starting line-up, so this was not a case of a weakened side. [2] headlined its live blog with Jackson scoring to restore Villa’s lead, which fits a match that swung back and forth before Villa finished in front.
The reaction centred on Villa’s strengths as much as City’s faults. [3] reported pundits calling Jackson a “special talent”, and a Villa fan praised manager Unai Emery’s tactical approach in [4]. For City, [5] described a result that left fans frustrated and marked a significant setback in the league campaign. It was the first league loss after seven wins, so the damage is limited, but the manner of it raised questions.
The defensive questions
The sharpest focus fell on the back line. [6] wrote that City’s perfect start ended because of defensive frailties, with Donnarumma and Marc Guéhi under scrutiny for errors. The same report notes that each has made three errors leading to Premier League goals since the start of last season. It also says City have conceded nine goals in their past four matches.
Guéhi was substituted at half-time at Villa. The Guardian’s match report says he was replaced because of his performance, rather than an injury. [7] reports that manager Enzo Maresca expressed no concern about Guéhi’s form despite the early withdrawal, while the same item describes City’s defence as struggling. Those two messages sit side by side: public backing for the player, and a visible change at the interval.
The nine-goals figure is worth reading carefully. It covers four matches across competitions, not only the league, so it should not be read as a league-only collapse. It is still a clear trend for a team that has built its season on scoring freely and controlling games.
Form across competitions
The club’s own records show a team still winning more than it loses. City sit first in the Premier League with 21 points from eight games: seven wins, no draws and one defeat, with 20 goals scored and nine conceded. Their last five results, newest first, were:
- Aston Villa away, 1-2 loss in the Premier League
- PAE AEK at home, 5-1 win in the Champions League
- Ipswich Town at home, 3-2 win in the Premier League
- Paris Saint-Germain at home, 2-4 loss in the Champions League
- Liverpool away, 3-0 win in the Premier League
One line in the Guardian’s report describes the Villa result as City’s fourth defeat in a row. The club’s results do not support that, since they show two wins in the previous four games, so we have not relied on it. What the results do show is a pattern of leaky matches: 4 conceded against PSG, 2 against Ipswich, 1 against AEK and 2 against Villa. The attack has kept answering, with 5 against AEK, 3 against Ipswich and 3 at Liverpool.
The title race is also tighter. [8] reports that Arsenal beat Everton 2-0, a win that brings them level on points with leaders City.
What it means
City still lead the league, but the cushion has gone. Level on 21 points with Arsenal, they no longer have an unbeaten record to lean on, and the next few results will show whether Villa was a one-off or the latest sign of a pattern. Their league record of 20 scored and 9 conceded is strong. The recent run of two or more goals conceded in most matches is the part that needs fixing.
The next fixture is a useful test. City host Brighton on 31 October in the Premier League, and it asks a simple question of the back line: can it go a full match without the kind of error that Donnarumma and Guéhi have been criticised for? Whether Guéhi keeps his place after being taken off at half-time is the obvious selection point, given Maresca’s public show of confidence. Haaland’s goal at Villa shows the attack will create chances, so a tighter defensive display could be enough to restore the winning run.
The site’s forecast for the Brighton match locks 24 hours before kick-off, so no prediction is published here yet. When it is, it will be graded publicly against the result like every other forecast.
