A second straight defeat at the Etihad
Manchester City were beaten 1-0 at home by Brighton & Hove Albion, and the result extends a worrying run. According to [1], Yasin Ayari scored in the 11th minute from a move that began with a disputed free-kick. City never found a way back. It was their second consecutive league defeat, following the loss at Aston Villa, and [2] notes it was Brighton’s first away league win against City.
The frustrating part for City is how the game went. [3] reports that City had 21 shots on target without scoring, and that their expected goals figure of 1.92 was well ahead of Brighton’s 1.00. By that measure City created the better chances and still lost. Brighton, by contrast, have now kept five clean sheets in six league games and sit third, according to the same report.
That contrast matters. City were not outplayed in territory or in chances, but they were punished early and then could not break down a well-organised opponent. Pundits on Match of the Day, as summarised by [4], praised Brighton’s balance, which suggests the visitors earned the result as well as benefiting from City’s finishing.
Selection choices and a leaky back line
Enzo Maresca made notable changes. [1] confirms that Marc Guéhi was dropped, with Matheus Nunes and Ayyoub Bouaddi selected in his place, and that Rayan Cherki also lost his starting place and came on as a substitute. [5] adds that Phil Foden was left on the bench and that City started three physical midfielders together: Enzo Fernandez, Elliot Anderson and Bouaddi.
The approach looks like an attempt to add steel, and the defensive numbers explain why. The same report says City have kept only one clean sheet in their past eight games in all competitions and have conceded 10 league goals in nine games. Maresca cited individual errors at the back. Gianluigi Donnarumma was culpable for an error at Aston Villa, and the manager has said he remains his first-choice goalkeeper.
The tension is clear. A more physical midfield did not produce a goal despite the volume of shots, while the creative options on the bench, Foden and Cherki, were held back. Another [6] piece quotes a City fan saying problems from last season are resurfacing, and frames Maresca’s task as addressing those issues. Balancing control, creativity and defensive solidity is the central question of his selections right now.
What it means
Despite two defeats in a row, City are still first in the Premier League on 21 points from nine games, with seven wins and two losses and a goal record of 20 scored and 10 conceded. Brighton’s win lifted them to third on 19 points, so the gap at the top is small. [7] had City level on points with Arsenal before this latest loss, which shows how quickly the picture can change.
The form line is less comfortable. City’s last five results read a 2-4 Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain, a 3-2 league win over Ipswich Town, a 5-1 Champions League win over AEK, then the defeats at Aston Villa (1-2) and against Brighton (0-1). They have conceded in four of those five games, and the two league losses came with a total of three goals against and only one scored. The attack is producing chances, but the margin for error at the back has shrunk.
The next fixture asks a direct question of Maresca’s rebuild. City travel to RB Leipzig in the Champions League on 4 November, and the site’s forecast for that match locks 24 hours before kick-off, so no prediction is published yet. The key points to watch are whether Guéhi returns to the defence, whether Foden and Cherki start, and whether City can turn a high shot count into goals while protecting a back line that has leaked too often. A clean sheet would be the most telling sign that the recent dip is being corrected.
