A win that arrived after the break
Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on 31 October, and the result owed a great deal to the second half. According to [1], Chelsea did not score until the 50th minute, when Morgan Rogers ran through for a solo goal. It was his sixth of the season in all competitions, and he has now been involved in 10 goals in 13 appearances.
The game changed when United were reduced to ten men. [2] reports that Lisandro Martínez was sent off after conceding a penalty, and Cole Palmer converted it to make it 2-0. [3] described the visitors’ second-half collapse as the opening Chelsea took advantage of. Bruno Fernandes had returned as United captain, but United could not hold their shape once they went a man down.
The win also answered a poor week. Chelsea had failed to score in their previous home match, a defeat to Tottenham, so a first-half stalemate followed by two second-half goals was a clear improvement in the result, if not yet in fluency.
Estevao, Palestra and a strikerless look
Selection was the other story. João Pedro, Chelsea’s first-choice striker, was out with a thigh injury suffered before the Tottenham game, according to [1]. That left Chelsea without a recognised number nine, and a [4] fan-opinion piece described the side as strikerless.
Estevao was the beneficiary. He had been an unused substitute at Liverpool, but head coach Xabi Alonso said the decision to start him was made after the Tottenham defeat. It was his first Premier League start of the season for Chelsea. The same BBC piece called his performance electric even though he had two goals disallowed, which suggests the threat was there and only the finishing decisions went against him.
Marco Palestra also made his first Chelsea start, according to [2]. Together with Estevao, that points to Alonso rotating younger or less-used players into the side rather than waiting for the injury list to clear. Both selections were rewarded with a clean win, which gives Alonso a case for keeping some of that freshness in the team.
Injuries and the defensive picture
The injury list is the main worry. BBC Sport listed eight Chelsea players as unavailable before kick-off. In defence, Maxence Lacroix has a hamstring problem that [5] reports, citing The Athletic, is feared to keep him out until January. That is a newspaper report, but Alonso himself said, as [6] records, that Lacroix will not be ready before the international break and will be out for a few weeks. Jorrel Hato and Aaron Anselmino are also injured.
There was one piece of good news: Moisés Caicedo avoided injury despite concerns after the midweek clash with Liverpool. With so many absentees, keeping the midfield intact matters.
Defensive solidity has been a problem. BBC Sport noted that before this match Chelsea had kept only one clean sheet in eight league games. Shutting out United, even against ten men for part of the game, is a small step toward fixing that, but it came against reduced opposition and should not be over-read.
What it means
The win lifts Chelsea to fourth in the Premier League with 16 points from nine games (W5 D1 L3, 19 scored, 15 conceded). Before the match they were fifth on 13 points from eight, so the three points moved them up a place. The goal difference of +4 is healthy, though 15 conceded in nine games backs up the concern about clean sheets.
The form line is mixed but trending upward. Since the 3-0 defeat at Brentford on 18 September, the results read a 5-1 home win over Bournemouth, a 2-0 win at Everton, a 0-2 home loss to Tottenham and now this 2-0 win over United. That is three wins in four, with the one loss coming at Stamford Bridge without a goal scored. Two clean sheets in the last three matches is a better defensive return than the earlier season average.
The next fixture asks a different question. Chelsea visit Sunderland on 8 November, and Alonso will probably still be without João Pedro, Lacroix, Hato and Anselmino. The test is whether the Estevao-led attack can score without a recognised striker against opponents who will not be a man down. The site’s forecast for that match locks 24 hours before kick-off, so no prediction is published here yet.
